Habitat for Artists, ArtPort, Kingston, NY
This was the start of a developing project that delves into spirituality and politics, as I understand them. I understand spirituality to be “the art of living” and politics to be “the art of living together.” We discussed these concepts while sharing a dish I had made that was purposely unfamiliar to many. During our conversations, the participants collectively expressed their perceptions, experiences, insights and visions through art in a variety of forms while discovering and tasting arepas. Arepas are flat, round cornmeal cakes, similar in size to English muffins, that typically have toppings or fillings including cheese, butter or meat. A staple food in Central and South America, they originated in Venezuela, my country of origin, some 3,000 years ago.
